Strategic leadership shaped by a service mindset

A new strategic thinking podcast about strategic leadership
How to lead organizations to change and innovate? Listen to the latest episode of our Strategic Thinking podcast where I talk to Christie Tarantino-Dean, CEO of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), about how she thinks, plans and leads strategically . With more than 30 years of nonprofit management experience, Christie shares her wisdom on building critical relationships and leading with vision.

Christie’s key insights:
“I’ve actually started taking a full week every season to think more. I’m always thinking about the future, but I do have dedicated uninterrupted time to think about it.

“If you’re not making about 20 percent of your membership uncomfortable, you’re probably not doing enough to move your organization into the future.”

“We’re committed to constructive dissent, where people say what they really think in meetings and feel comfortable with it so that we don’t later say, ‘Well, I knew this was going to be a bad idea. ” But at the end of the day, someone has to have it, and you can’t get everyone 100% — maybe you can get 80%, and then you can evaluate whether it’s the right decision and adjust your approach based on the situation.

“At the end of the day, it’s impossible to please everyone. So we try to focus on the overall good and really understand how we can have the greatest impact, which is focusing on what we do.

“As an organization, delivering on our vision and mission means we need to continually change and evolve in order to deliver. If we really want to have that kind of impact, the status quo will quickly lead you down the path to irrelevance.
