SERP Tracking with Free Tools: Starter Kit

Each of these free tools allows you to check rankings for different positions without “polluting” the results with Google’s personalization algorithm.

You can use AWT to see which keywords are bringing you traffic, how well you rank for those keywords, and which pages rank for those keywords.

The tool has many convenient data filters. For example, you can track the top 10 keywords, keywords that contain a specific phrase, or keywords for specific pages on your website. You can also check your ranking in SERP features and switch countries.

  • Setup items (only for sites where you can verify ownership).
  • Click on the Organic Keywords card on your dashboard.
  • You will see your keywords, rankings, and page rank for a given keyword. Use filters to optimize reports.

If you’re new to Google Search Console (GSC), it’s a free tool that provides insights into organic traffic directly from Google and alerts you to potential issues that could impact your site’s performance.

Use GSC to track your ranking in video, news and image search engine results pages – no other free tool provides this kind of data.

  2. After GSC has finished preparing your data, go to Performance > Search Results > Search Type Filters.

GSC also allows you to track the click-through rate of your pages on the SERPs. This is useful for improving page titles and meta descriptions (See our guide).

Keyword Browser for Ahrefs is a powerful keyword research tool in the Ahrefs suite. Powered by one of the world’s top 50 supercomputers, it provides access to a massive database of 27.8 billion keywords in 243 countries. Here are a few ways you can use this tool to view the SERP.

Analyze SEPR by comparing top, rank and position search intent on different dates. This allows you to see if you can rank for two keywords with the same content, see which pages rank higher as yours decreases, and check if there are changes in the SERPs that dominate search intent.

You can also view the ranking history for any keyword and any domain. One way to use this report is to examine SERP volatility.

The Keyword Browser also gives you access to search volume history and forecasts. This allows you to track changes in keyword demand and understand how it relates to changes in website traffic, or make more informed keyword choices.
