The last thing I want to talk about is who actually shows up in the Artificial Intelligence Overview.
Currently, we see an average of about 6.4 links to third-party websites from AI Overview. We currently think of two types of connections in the Artificial Intelligence Overview. Preview links look almost like mini search results with a thumbnail, usually an image in the upper right corner. Then there are very few links, often with just a link symbol in the text and not actually linking out directly. You click on them and then it opens a preview box and then you have to click again. So if we just count the big links that look like regular search results, it’s more like three, three links per search result.
Likewise, if we look at these 6.4 links, all of them (only about 52% of them) will also rank in the top 10 for the same keyword. So this overlap with conventional organic food is fairly low. This means your regular SEO strategies may not be working. But again, if we only look at preview links, this rises to around 80%. So there’s a big difference here. If we’re only interested in those preview links that are the most visually obvious and direct to click on, your correlation with regular organic rankings is much stronger. Hopefully this gives us a little more insight into what’s going on with the featured snippets that we’re used to, the way that appears in the featured snippets right now is basically number one.
Another thing I want to point out related to the above points is that we typically see lower domain authority and brand authority For sites that appear in the AI Overview, they are only slightly higher than the top 10 organic sites. So it’s no surprise that they perform worse in some statistics.
So what can we take away from this? As I said, the main thing to consider is whether you’re losing clicks, which is by no means a given, but if you’re losing clicks because of the AI overview, what kind of clicks are they? How does this fit into your overall strategy? What pipes would you replace them with? Because the entire channel is unlikely to be consistent.
Obviously, this affects some types of businesses much more than others. If you’re a publisher, you’re probably almost exclusively involved in information search, and if so, it’s a challenging place to be. The bar is definitely going up for the complexity of the question that people would expect to click through to another website. This is something I’ve talked about before.
Likewise, if you want Ranking in AI Overviewat this point, I would say, it’s getting to the point where you don’t do anything special anymore to do it. I mean, I’m not saying it’s easy, but it’s becoming more and more integrated with your regular organic food. Hopefully this clears up some of the complexity for you.
I hope this is useful. I look forward to your feedback and any other ideas you may have. Thank you so much.
