If you are not a developer, Python may be intimidating. You’ll see scripts flying around Twitter, hear people talking about automation and APIs, and wonder if it’s worth learning, or even worth it Possible– No degree in computer science.
But here’s the truth: SEO is full of repetitive, time-consuming tasks that Python can automate in minutes. Things like checking broken links, scratching metadata, analyzing rankings and auditing on page SEO can all work with a few lines of code. In this guide, I will show you how to get started.
SEO is full of repetitive manual work. Python can help you automate repetitive tasks, extract insights from large data sets such as thousands of keywords or URLs, and build technical skills to help you solve almost any SEO problem: debug JavaScript problems, parse complex sitemaps, or use APIs.
Besides that, learning Python can help you:
- Understand how website and network data work (Believe it or not, the Internet is no Tube).
- Work more effectively with developers (How do you plan to generate Thousands of Location-specific pages Programmatic SEO Activity? )
- Learning the programming logic that translates into other languages and toolssuch as building Google Apps scripts to automate reports in Google sheets, or writing liquid templates created by dynamic pages in headless CMS.
In 2025, you don’t learn Python alone. LLM can interpret error messages. Google COLAB allows you to run your notebook without setting it up. It’s never been easy.

LLM can handle most error messages easily, no matter how stupid they may be.
You don’t need to be an expert or install complex local settings. You only need a browser, some curiosity and willingness to ruin things.

Here’s what you need to know:
1. Tools for writing and running Python
Before writing any Python code, you need a place to do it – that’s what we call “environment”. Think of it as a workspace where you can type, test, and run scripts.
Choosing the right environment is important because it can affect your ease of getting started and whether you have technical issues that slow down your learning.
Here are three great options depending on your preferences and experience level:
- Replenish: Browser-based IDE (Integrated Development Environment), which means you can provide a place to write, run and debug Python code from a web browser. You don’t need to install anything, just register, open a new project and start coding. It even includes AI features that help you write and debug Python scripts in real time. Access REPEIT.
- Google Colab: Google’s free tool that lets you run Python notebooks in the cloud. Very useful for SEO tasks involving data analysis, scratching, or machine learning. You can also share notebooks like Google Docs, which are great for collaboration. Visit Google Colab.
- VS Code + Python Interpreter: If you want to work locally or want to have more control over the settings, install the Visual Studio code and Python extension. This gives you plenty of flexibility to access the file system, and support advanced workflows (such as GIT version operations) or use a virtual environment. Visit the VS code website.

You don’t have to start here – but as the project grows, comfort for local development will bring you greater strength and flexibility.

2. Key concepts for early learning
You don’t need to master Python to start using it for SEO, but you should understand some basic concepts. These are the basis for almost every Python script you want to write.
- Variables, loops and functions: Variables store data like URL lists. Loop lets you repeat operations (for example, checking HTTP status codes for each page). Features allow you to bundle actions into reusable blocks. These three ideas will power 90% of your automation. - Lists, dictionaries and conditions: Lists can help you handle collections (such as pages of all websites). Dictionary stores data in pairs (e.g. URL + title). Conditional (e.g., otherwise) can help you decide what to do based on what the script finds. These are especially useful for branch logic or filtering results. - Import and use libraries: Python has thousands of libraries: pre-written packaging for your heavy lifting. For example, a request allows you to send HTTP requests, BeautifureSoup4 parses HTML and PANDAS HANDER SERVER tables and data analysis. You will use these in almost every SEO task. These concepts sound abstract now, but once you start using them, they come to life. And good news? Most SEO scripts reuse the same pattern time and time again. Learn these basics at once and you can apply them everywhere.
3. Core Python skills related to SEO
These are the bread and fuel skills you use in almost every SEO script. They are not individually complex, but when combined, they allow you to review websites, scrape data, build reports, and automate repetitive work.
- Make an HTTP request: This is how Python loads web pages behind the scenes. Using the request library, you can check the page’s status code (such as 200 or 404), get HTML content, or simulate crawling. Learn more from this Real Python’s Request Module Guide.
- Parsing HTML: After getting the page, you usually need to extract specific elements such as title tags, meta descriptions, or all image alt attributes. That’s where BeautifulSoup4 comes from. It helps you browse and search HTML like a professional. This real Python tutorial It explains exactly how it works.
- Read and write CSV: SEO data lives in spreadsheets: ranking, URL, metadata, etc. Python can read and write CSV using built-in CSV modules or more powerful Pandas libraries. Learn how Datacamp’s Pandas Tutorial.
- Using API: Many SEO tools such as AHREFS, Google Search Console, or Screaming Frog provide API-interfaces that allow you to fetch data in a structured format of JSON (such as JSON). With Python’s requests and JSON libraries, you can pull this data into your own reports or dashboards. Here is a basic overview of the API with Python.

The PANDAS library is very useful for data analysis, reporting, cleaning data, and one hundred other things.
Once you know these four skills, you can build tools to crawl, extract, clean and analyze SEO data. Very cool.
These projects are simple, practical, and can be built with less than 20 lines of code.
1. Check if the page is using https
One of the easiest but most useful checks you can use Python automation is to verify that a set of URLs is using HTTPS. If you are reviewing a customer’s website or reviewing competitor URLs, you can help know which pages are still using unsafe HTTP.
This script reads a list of URLs from a CSV file, reads an HTTP request to each script, and prints a status code. A status code of 200 means that the page is accessible. It will also tell you if the request fails (for example, the site is closed or the protocol is incorrect).

2. Check for missing image alt attributes
Lack of ALT text is a common page problem, especially on older pages or larger sites. Instead of manually checking each page, you can use python to scan any page and tag images with ALT attributes. This script gets the page html and identifies allLabel and print out any image with SRC missing descriptive alt text.

3. Scratch title and meta description tags

4. Using Python with AHREFS API
If you are an AHREFS customer with API access, you can use Python to directly leverage our data, get backlinks, keywords, rankings, and more. This opens the door to a massive SEO workflow: audit thousands of pages, analyze competitor link profiles or automate content reports.
For example, you can:
- Monitor new backlinks for new websites every day and log them to Google Sheet
- Automatically pull out your top organic pages every month for content reporting
- Track keywords ranking faster across multiple sites and spot trends compared to using UI alone

- Redirect matching script: This script automatically redirects the mapping by matching old and new URLs through full text similarity. Upload your front and back URLs, run your notebook, and then suggest redirects for you. This is very helpful during the migration process. Run the script here.
- Page Title Similarity Report: Google often rewrites page titles in search results. The tool compares the title you submitted (via AHREFS data) with what Google actually displays and uses a BERT model to measure semantic similarity. Ideal for large-scale title reviews. Run the script here.
