If you read Google’s Guideyou may have seen what they say: “Choose the minimum category you need to describe your overall core business.”
I want to strongly disagree here.
Let me explain why loading your profile with more categories can actually help you rank, especially for those niche services you don’t want to miss.
You can select up to 10 categories on Google Business Profile (GBP).
More categories = More opportunities to appear in various searches.
Take the dentist as an example. Actually, there are 10 categories that apply to them. Why? Because their services are super varied – from “dentists” to “dental whitening”, to “oral surgeons”, and so on.
If you take Google’s advice and only add “dentist”, you’ll miss out on the potential to improve your rankings in terms of “tute whitening” keyword.
Real-world case study: Ignoring Google’s gardener
We recently worked with gardeners and initially only used “gardeners” as their category. It seems logical.
But we added these other categories:
- Landscape designer
- Landscape designer
- Retain wall supplier
result?
They began ranking searches like “landscape architects” and “landscape designers”, which are the keywords they want to rank and are relevant to their services.

tl;dr: More categories can help you rank better. Don’t hesitate to use all 10 category slots to cover every niche you offer.
